Why I love the PS2

Even today, the PS2 holds up. It is actually my second favourite games console.
The games are creative, the stories are deep, and the console itself is reliable. It doesn't need constant updates or internet access, just pop in a disc and play. Which is why even though I have a PlayStation 4, I still come back to my PS2 for those nostalgic gaming sessions. It's the console that taught me how immersive old games consoles could be. It wasn't just about fun, a lot of the games made you feel part of a story in a way nintendo never quite captured.

My favourite PS2 Games

1. ⚔️ God of War ⚔️

Kratos Image

God of War is an action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The original game was released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, and is influenced by Greek Mythology. You play as Kratos, a Spartan warrior who defeats the previous of god of war and becomes the new God.

I loved every aspect of this game and it was the first game that made me fall in love with my PS2. Although there have been many God of War games released since the original and the graphics have improved tenfold; none of them match up to the original storyline and choice of weapons for me. My favourite being the Blades of Chaos as seen in the trailer below. I'd explain a bit more about the weapon, but I feel it's self explanatory.

✅ Fun Facts about God of War

  • 🌀 Kratos was almost blue: Kratos's red tattoo was going to be blue, but developers changes it to red to avoid clashing with a character from Diablo II.
  • 🇪🇬 The game was originally going to be set in Egypt: The original concept for God of War was set in ancient Egypt, but the developers later switched to Greek mythology.
  • ⚔️ The Blades of Chaos were added at the last minute: The signature weapon of the original game, the Blades of Chaos, were added quite late on in development.
  • 🗡️ It was originally more puzzle orientated: It was originally going to be a puzzle and exploration game, however due to popularity during testing, it became the main focus of the game.

2. 🩸 Blood will Tell 🩸

Despite the violent sounding name, it's just another action game!

This follows the storyline of Hyakkimaru, a samurai whose body parts were sold to demons when he was a baby. You follow him on the epic journey trying to recover each of his 48 body parts from the fiends who stole them from him. Along the way he saves a little boy called Dororo, who then becomes his ally in helping him defeat these 48 fiends.

I love the world seeking elements of this game, and the fact it truly offers you no hints. You could get to the end of this game and not have recovered every body part. What's even cooler is that you can go back through each chapter of the game and re-explore each part of the world. What makes this game unique is the fact that Hyakkimaru has prosthetics hiding his weapons: his arms turn into dual blades, his one arm also doubles as a machine gun, and he has a cannon in his leg.
